So I went to The Bengies with my wife on Saturday night, for the first time in a couple of years, to catch a show on the last night before this wonderful place shuts down for the season. It’s the first time I’ve ever been there in the fall and I’m officially prepared to say that I love that concept: They’ll rent you a quiet, unobtrusive and effective heater for your car for $1, the movies start before 5:30 and wrap up by 11 (three hours earlier than the summer), the crowds are far far smaller and the place remains an absolute bargain compared to a movie theater.
Kristi and I saw Wreck It Ralph (loved it in so many ways), Alex Cross (a truly, spectacularly and hilariously awful film) and — finally — Argo (great but the ending defied plausibility — why make the story more dramatic than it already was?). We also noshed at the cheapest movie snack bar I’ve seen for years, watched all of the old-school drive-in promos and teasers between films, and generally had a great time. The Bengies remains a treasure and I’ll certainly remember how nice it is to visit in the fall.
